School Profile
Beechworth Secondary College, a small secondary college with an enrolment around 250, is situated in attractive, spacious grounds, covering four hectares. We completed the first stage of our total replacement program at the end of 2008 and this resulted in new Administration and Arts/Technology Blocks.
Beechworth, with a population of around 3,700, is a progressive community with a lively cultural life. It is close to the two large rural centres of Wangaratta and Albury/Wodonga, yet is not dominated by them. Proud of its modest size and the friendly, personal way in which staff, students and parents work together, the College provides a comprehensive curriculum from Year 7 to Year 12 taught by a talented and dedicated staff.
Our vision is 'Connecting Communities, Widening Worlds...' and we make the most of the significant advantages of our small size and provide a rigorous, well-balanced education which enables all students to develop to their full potential. We emphasise the importance of students being independent and responsible and we instil the values of honesty, courtesy and respect for others.
Curriculum offerings at Years 7, 8 and 9 consists of core components covering the eight Key Learning Areas. In Year 10 an elective programme complements the core subjects. Students are also able to study VET and VCE subjects as part of their Year 10 studies. In Years 11 and 12 we offer a comprehensive VCE, VET and VCAL program. This program is supplemented by high-definition video conferencing, TAFE, Wodonga Trade Training Centre consortium membership and Distance Education.
Beechworth Secondary College is an 'Access Asia' school and we have a curriculum focus on the study of Asia and making links with Asian schools and teachers. We have a wide range of extra-curricular activities including instrumental music and Kool Skools participation, an annual musical production, a wide range of excursions, competitions, theatre visits, visiting performances, sports program, snow sports and camps. The local community radio station Indigo FM has its’ studio on our campus and students have the opportunity to deliver live radio programs.
The strength of the College is attributable in no small measure to the talent and commitment of staff and their rapport with parents and the community. Staff at Beechworth Secondary College are noted for their generous and enthusiastic support for the extensive extra-curricular program, for their general nurturing of students and the strong collegiality amongst colleagues. Our Staff and Student Opinion Survey data is generally well above the state average for secondary schools.
