Student Leadership

Student leadership matters at Beechworth Secondary College. Leadership does not have to be deliberate or intentional to be effective. What is important is that we build a leadership culture among students. This also links closely with Student Voice.

Our leadership culture is one where students are challenged and made aware of their potential as leaders, are given opportunities to develop and exercise leadership skills, and are supported in their leadership initiatives and activities.

Not every student may want to be a school leader, but every student can be invited to choose whether they wish to develop their innate ability to lead. Accordingly, Beechworth Secondary College adopts both formal and informal opportunities for students to display leadership.

Year 12 students may apply for College Leadership positions which involve specific areas of responsibility. These positions are filled after competitive selection and an interview process. These positions are as follows:

  • College Captains
  • Student Representative Council (SRC) Leaders

Each year there are also sporting leadership roles for students to nominate for

  • House Captains, Junior and Senior (Bogong, Hotham, Buffalo)
  • Vice House Captains, Junior and Senior (Bogong, Hotham, Buffalo)

Students from Years 7 - 12 can also be nominated to represent their peers on the Student Representative Council (SRC). This body functions as a voice for students and is proactive in promoting fundraising and social justice activities in the College. There are generally three representatives from each year level.

Other formal leadership opportunities exist such as Peer Support Leaders (Year 10).

As we continue to encourage Student Voice within the College, we are pleased that there are SRC representatives on all the College committees including Education Committee, ICT Committee and School Council.
