Transition

At Beechworth Secondary College, we understand that the transition from primary to secondary school can be an exciting time and challenging for others,  for both parents and children alike. With this in mind, we introduce prospective students to our school over a series of transition days throughout the year prior to attending the College. We also organize Year 7 parent information nights, so that new parents can tour the college facilities, meet the staff and gain an understanding of what is on offer to students at the College.

We have an outstanding informative and interactive opportunity to see what the school can offer when we hold our Open Night- for any students who may look to moving to Beechworth SC in the future.

2018  OPEN NIGHT is Monday 19th March   7pm to 8-30 pm

State wide Year 6 Transition Day is Tuesday 11th  December  2018.

Tours of the school with the Principal can be arranged by contacting the office.

These are available each week.

Our Peer Support Program is also a vital aspect in our Transition Program. A transition program that incorporates the following four phases is essential for students to experience effective transition from primary school to secondary school.

Preparation - The Year 7 Coordinator from Beechworth Secondary College travels to the primary schools to visit students and assist teachers in delivering relevant information and preparatory programs.

All year 5 & 6 students from the local primary schools will participate in transition experiences, assisting them to better prepare for the move to secondary school, regardless of whether they are intending to come to Beechworth Secondary. We believe we are able to support all students in our local area in this.

Transfer - Transfer activities include student/parent meetings and student orientation days. It also includes some special activity days where prospective students are invited to participate.

Induction - The College provides a variety of programs intended to orientate students to the expectations and operations of the school. Among other one-off and ongoing activities, students participate in an Orientation Camp in the first or second week of school. Students are also supported in this phase by a Peer Leader, a specially trained Year 10 student who looks after a small group of students.

Consolidation - Transition activities assist students to merge into the overall student welfare and support programs. Late Year 7 and early Year 8 present an opportunity to introduce activities specifically designed to provide students with the means of resolving conflict as well as with managing their own learning.
